Hokuma Gurbanova - 100.

On 28 April, 2014 at 14:00, the Union of Theatre Workers of Azerbaijan held a presentation of the book “Pages of Life” dedicated to the 100thanniversary of the USSR People’s Artist, Hokuma Gurbanova.

The author of the book is theatre critic, ChingizAlesgerli. People’s Artist, Professor, Azer Pasha Nematov wrote the preface to the book.

Prominent theatre professionals shared their memories of the great actress, and also a slideshow of the actress’s works was shown. Presenting the presentation ceremony, Doctor of Arts, professor, Honoured Figure of Arts, Maryam Alizade told about the rich creative way of Hokuma khanum.

Hokuma Gurbanova is an immortal master who wrote glorious pages in the history of the theatre of Azerbaijan. The actress, who served almost 50 years of national performing arts, is one of the few talents who have won the hearts of viewers.

Hokuma Abbasali gyzy Gurbanova was born on 11 June, 2013 in Baku. She is the niece of the great Azerbaijani composer Muslim Magomayev.

The actress, who came to the theatre in 1939, forever linked her fate with the Azerbaijan State Academic National Drama Theatre. Romantic and tragic characters she created on the stage of this theatre, such as Reyhan, Konul, Khumar, Sona, Susan, Hermione, Olivia, Vasantasena, Maria Tudor, Jeanne d’Arch, Cleopatra, Banovsha, Sevinj, Sudaba, Tolkanay, Lady Macbeth, Khanuma, Mahmana were distinguished by her strong stage plasticity, and by her powerful temperament which brought her great fame.

Hokuma khanum also created unforgettable characters in the films “Can he be forgiven?”, “A man is settling down”, “I will dance” and many others shot at the “Azerbaijanfilm” studio.

In 1965, Hokuma Gurbanova was awarded the honorary title “People’s Artist of the USSR” for her contribution to the performing arts. She was awarded the Order of Lenin, the Red Banner of Labor, Glory and many medals.

In 1965, she was awarded the State Prize of the Republic of Azerbaijan for the character of Cleopatra in the play “Anthony and Cleopatra”, staged by director Tofig Kazimov.

Hokuma Gurbanova was an active public figure, and was elected deputy of the Supreme Council of the Azerbaijan Republic of several convocations. There were published two monographs, two brochures and a large number of articles about her.

The actress died in 1988 and was buried in the Honor Alley in Baku.
